One week before the competition
Wei Lin’s (captain) grandmother passes away and she gets stuck in Johore until the following Sunday.
That Monday…
Nadia, one of our two flyers, falls from Elevator, and by certain bad luck, loses a tooth at its roots. One is sunken, she needed stitches on her lower jaw and had to x ray her nose. The team was traumatized. I’ll never forget the blood, I was the calmest of the lot, but the memory of hearing the gasps, and turning around to find her getting up, opening her mouth, and all that gruesome blood that wouldn’t stop spilling… We almost gave up. Almost.
That Thursday
Rachel, our last flyer, says she has this eye infection. It did look red, but we needed her. Didn’t look like she cared, she seemed to have given up on us anyway. So that left us with no flyer, with 12 people, four people with at least one year of interhouse experience and 8 who just joined this year. It left us with no flyer, but many capable bases. It rendered us helpless with only 2 days left…
That Friday
One day to go. We did our best to come up with something, anything. Thank God for Farah and Yen Shan, ex-captain and ex-senior. We practiced until it was almost perfect. We had no flyer, so what? We couldn’t pull out, it was NOT an option. Went home exhausted, collapsed in bed.
The Day
It was so fast, I couldn’t believe it. Nevermind I screwed up the beginning by forgetting the timing, we pulled off something despite what everyone thought. Nevermind that we got last, we still had a medal, and cheers. Nevermind that the public thought we sucked, everyone else knew we did well, despite the circumstances.
But most of all, we knew we won. It is something not measured by medals, recognition or glory, but by our spirit and determination.
Here’s a ridiculously edited version of Remember the Name, Fort Minor.
You ready?! Lets go!
Yeah, for those of you that want to know what we're all about
It's like this y'all (c'mon!)
This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!
We don’t want our name up in lights
We just want to be heard whether it's the beat or the mic
We feel so unlike everybody else, alone
In spite of the fact that some people still think that they know us
But fuck em, we know the code
It's not about the glory
It’s all about reality and making some noise
Makin the story - makin sure his clique stays up
Never concerned with status but still leavin them star struck
Humbled through opportunities given to us despite the fact
That many misjudge us because we make a livin by failin
Put it together, now the picture connects
Never askin for someone's help, to get some respect
We only focused on what we wrote, our will is beyond reach
And now when it all unfolds, the skill of an artist
It's just twenty percent skill
Eighty percent fear
Be one hundred percent clear cause Rachel is ill
Who would've thought that she’d be the one to set the west in flames
We’re not your everyday on the block
We know how to work with what we’ve got
Dedicated to what they doin give a hundred percent
Forget Shirtliff - Nobody really knows how or why we work so hard
It seems like we’ve never got time
Because we write every note and every line
And I've seen them at work when that light goes on in their minds
It's like a design is written in their heads every time
Before we even touch a key or speak in a rhyme
And those motherfuckers they run with, those kids that they signed?
Ridiculous, without even trying, how do they do it?!
For Nadia (especially), Rachel, Wei Lin – Welcome to the Black Parade, My Chemical Romance
Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me.
And other times I feel like I should go.
Through it all, the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets.
When you're gone we want you all to know
We'll Carry on,
We'll Carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
Carry on
We'll carry on
And in my heart I cant contain it
The anthem wont explain it.
And we will send you reeling from decimated dreams
Your misery and hate will kill us all
So paint it black and take it back
Lets shout it loud and clear
Do you fight it to the end
We hear the call to
To carry on
We'll carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
You're weary widow marches on
And on we carry through the fears
Ooh oh ohhhh
Disappointed faces of your peers Ooh oh ohhhh
Take a look at me cause
I could not care at all
Do or die
You'll never make me
Cause the world, will never take my heart
You can try, you'll never break me
Want it all,
I'm gonna play this part
Wont explain or say i'm sorry
I'm not ashamed,
I'm gonna show my scar
You're the chair, for all the broken Listen here, because it's only..
I'm just a man,
I'm not a hero
Just a boy, who's meant to sing this song
Just a man,
I'm not a hero
I -- don't -- care
Carry on
We'll carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me
Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
You're weary widow marches on
We'll carry on
We'll carry on
We'll carry on
We'll carry
We'll carry on
